Does Your Car Need A Tune-up?
Your car’s fuel and ignition systems are designed for years of trouble-free operation, but eventually will need a “tune-up.” Signs that it might be time for a tune-up include:
- Check engine or service engine lights are on.
- Decreased gas mileage.
- Reduced engine power.
- Stalling, knocking, or running rough.
The Benefits
If you own an older vehicle, a tune-up can:
- Boost engine performance.
- Improve gas mileage.
- Ensure reliable starts.
- Reduce harmful emissions.
Today’s vehicles can benefit from a tune-up anywhere between 60,000 and 100,000 miles. Your owners manual will provide additional guidance.
What is a Tune-Up these Days?
Before electric ignition, fuel injection, and computer control, a mechanic would “tune” your car engine as if it were a musical instrument, adjusting the ignition timing, idle speed, and fuel/air mixture. Today, your auto technician will inspect and/or replace the:
- Air and fuel filters.
- Spark plugs and spark plug wires.
- PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve.
And clean the:
- Fuel system (fuel injector, intake valve, combustion chamber).
- Air intake system (throttle body, throttle plate).
